Heartworm in Dogs – How Ideal Dale Has Successfully Protected Our Dogs for 20 Years
Did you know that a single mosquito bite can give your pet a deadly parasite? Heartworm disease (dirofilariasis) is becoming more common in Serbia due to climate change. In our kennel, for 20 years, we have been using a simple and affordable protocol that has 100% prevented the disease – and now we are sharing it with you, dog owners.
📖 What Does the American Kennel Club (AKC) Say?
According to the AKC’s official website, heartworm disease is considered one of the most dangerous threats to dog health in North America and worldwide. It is transmitted exclusively by mosquito bites, and early symptoms can be barely noticeable – mild cough, lethargy. As the disease progresses, the dog loses condition, develops a chronic cough, blood in the sputum, and eventually heart failure.
The AKC particularly emphasizes that prevention is far safer and cheaper than treatment. Treatment of advanced dirofilariasis is lengthy, risky, and expensive, often leaving permanent damage to the heart and lungs.
🐕 What Is Heartworm and Why Is It So Dangerous?
Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is a parasite that lives in the dog’s heart, pulmonary arteries, and surrounding blood vessels. Adult females can grow up to 30 centimeters (12 inches)! They physically clog blood vessels, damage heart valves, and cause severe inflammation of the pulmonary arteries.
The life cycle begins when a mosquito bites an infected animal (wolf, fox, or dog). The larvae (microfilariae) develop in the mosquito and are then transmitted to a healthy dog during the next bite. Once inside the dog, the larvae travel through the body and reach the heart within 6-7 months, where they become sexually mature worms.
✅ Our Protocol – 20 Years Without a Single Case of Heartworm
When we started our kennel two decades ago, we faced the same problem as all owners – how to protect dogs from parasites in an effective, simple, and affordable way.
After research and consultations with veterinarians, we introduced the following system:
- We use one type of tablet containing the active substance abamectin (belongs to the group of macrocyclic lactones, the same as ivermectin).
- This tablet has a dual action – it simultaneously cleans intestinal parasites (roundworms, hookworms, whipworms) AND protects against heartworm.
- We give it once every 3 to 4 months (instead of expensive monthly preparations).
- Before the first use – mandatory testing for the presence of adult heartworms.
The result: For 20 years, not a single dog in our kennel has had heartworm or problems with intestinal parasites. This is no coincidence – science confirms that abamectin kills L3 and L4 larvae, and our dosing schedule (every 3-4 months) never allows the larvae to reach the age of 6 months.
🔬 How Exactly Does the Tablet We Use Work? (Explanation for Owners)
The active substance abamectin belongs to the group of macrocyclic lactones. The same group includes the famous ivermectin (Heartgard) and moxidectin. These drugs work by paralyzing and killing the young larvae (L3 and L4 stages) of heartworm before they reach the heart.
What is especially important – abamectin also acts on intestinal parasites (roundworms, hookworms). That’s why one tablet solves two problems. Most expensive monthly preparations protect only against heartworm, while you have to give additional drugs for intestinal parasites.
By using our tablet (abamectin + praziquantel) you:
- ✅ protect your dog from heartworm
- ✅ regularly clean intestinal parasites
- ✅ give the drug only 3-4 times a year (instead of 12 times)
- ✅ spend significantly less money
It is important to note that abamectin does NOT kill adult heartworms – that is why testing before the first use is mandatory. Also, it does not act on tapeworms (praziquantel in the tablet takes care of them – but that’s another story).
⚠️ Before You Apply – Must Read (Important for Your Dog’s Safety)
🐾 Testing is MANDATORY
Before the first tablet, a heartworm test (antigen test) MUST be done. If the dog already has adult worms, the sudden killing of microfilariae can cause anaphylactic shock – a life-threatening condition.
📅 Age limit
Tablets should not be given to puppies younger than 2 months.
🧬 Sensitive breeds (MDR1 gene)
Breeds such as Collie, Scottish Shepherd, Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie), Old English Sheepdog (Bobtail) may have a genetic mutation that causes hypersensitivity to abamectin. In these breeds, even the standard dose can cause neurological symptoms. Consult your veterinarian before use.
⚠️ Side effects
In case of overdose: increased salivation, dilated pupils, gait disturbance. Always follow the prescribed dose (one tablet per 10 kg of body weight).
📊 Why Every 3-4 Months? (Science-Based Explanation)
Many macrocyclic lactone-based preparations are recommended for monthly use in the instructions. So why do we give it every 3-4 months and it has worked for 20 years?
Because abamectin (like ivermectin) has a long residual effect – it remains in the dog’s blood for weeks and continues to kill new larvae that enter in the meantime. Studies have shown that even with a delay of 2-3 months, drugs from this group still effectively eliminate accumulated larvae. Our 3-4 month protocol represents a safety net that has yielded perfect results in practice.
Note: If you live in an area with an extremely high presence of mosquitoes (swamps, rivers) or have a dog that is constantly outdoors, you can stick to a monthly schedule. But our 20 years of experience speaks in favor of the 3-4 month regimen for most dogs.
📦 How Can You Get the Tablets We Use?
Since we are also dog owners and breeders, we understand how important it is to have access to proven, effective, and affordable preparations. The tablets we use (active substance abamectin + praziquantel) are not always readily available in regular pharmacies, and prices at veterinary clinics are often high.
That is why we decided to share our source with you. If you are interested in obtaining the same tablet – or want more information about dosage, price, or shipping – feel free to contact us.
We offer only information and help.
❤️ In Closing – A Message to Dog Owners
At Ideal Dale, we have successfully protected our dogs with this simple protocol for 20 years. We want you to be able to do the same – without expensive monthly preparations, without complicated regimens, and without the fear that your dog will get heartworm.
If you have any questions – about dosage, age limits, sensitive breeds, or how to obtain the tablets – write to us. We are here to help as much as we can.
Yours, Goran Karanović and the Ideal Dale team 🐾
